TV shows were never my thing. I always preferred a movie or a random YouTube video late at night. All my friends continuously pushed me to watch Friends or The Office, but I could never find the motivation to start. No doubt they are all great shows. I guess I'm just picky?
Well this whole "I don't really watch TV" attitude changed once I found myself essentially paying rent to my couch during quarantine. I had to start expanding my horizons beyond Spongebob (even though that is the best show to ever exist).
I can proudly say I got hooked on many shows/series - even some I doubted at first. If you are looking to start a new show, fear no longer! Here are my current top picks for all you television fanatics out there:
Succession
The most recent show I've been hooked on. Definitely in my top five all time favorites. Yes it even deserves to be up there with Spongebob cause it's THAT good. Succession makes you laugh and cry at the same time. The best part of the show has to be the characters and their development. I feel like I have a personal connection to each one of them. My family and I are constantly going around the house doing impressions while citing quotes. It is incredibly written, the actors are amazing, and the storyline keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is a sign for you to get that HBO subscription you've been contemplating.
Breaking Bad
For years my family has tried to make me start this show. Obviously, I've heard about it and all of its greatness. I was just so hesitant. As I mentioned, it takes a lot for me to start such a hyped-up series. I really had no desire to get into a show that deals with drugs and violence. However, I was told it was so much more than that. So I gave it a shot - and it did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I cannot stop watching. Again, it is one of those shows that will give you tears from laughter and from sadness. I am only on season 3, but every episode has been incredible. Supposedly season 2 is the slowest, which boggled my mind. There is no "it takes awhile to get into" or "give it a few episodes" with this show. The pilot is one of the most epic things I've ever watched. Overall, the acting is phenomenal along with the camerawork. It truly is a work of art. Not to mention young Jessie is just... *chefs kiss 😍 .
Rick and Morty
Hilarious. Genius. Go watch it now. That is all.
Mandalorian
This was another one I was weary about. I never saw the hype around Baby Yoda and truly did not think it would live up to the OG Star Wars flicks. Once again, I was wrong. Seeing a pattern here? Let's just say I now own a Baby Yoda plush toy (named Grogu) and a few pairs of Baby Yoda socks. The reason I loved this series so much was because it did a great job reflecting the original Star Wars. They succeeded at still incorporating small details and not veering too far off the grid. I really enjoyed the story line and the relationship formed between Grogu and Mando. Excited for season three!
Someone Feed Phil
Netflix has a plethora of foodie shows making it extremely overwhelming at times. At first, this was just a filler show my boyfriend and I would put on as background noise before going to bed. However, we ended up fully watching every episode (multiple times). I fell in love with this show because of Phil honestly. He is the sweetest person and has the most upbeat personality (would never know he is actually a big-time TV producer). It is so interesting to see him travel all over the world to try new cuisine. However, the best part has to be when he video chats his adorable parents at the end of each episode. If you're a foodie and love to travel, please don't sleep on this one.
Industry
Recommended by my boyfriend's dad, Industry provides a look into the lives of a group of young graduates interning at a prestigious Investment Banking firm. You truly get to see how competitive some job roles are. If you're in the business world it is a very interesting and entertaining watch. It definitely makes me happy to not work at a firm like that - but it does make for a great TV show! It even helped me learn a little bit more about the stock market and how trading works. Who knew a fictional HBO show could do such wonders?
